Francesco Maria Giro
Undersecretary, Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities

On occasion of the conference “Stolen History: from Oblivion to Recovery *1861 – 2011*”(Triscina di Selinunte, May 8, 2011)
The commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of Italian Unity is not only an occasion to rediscover the roots of our national identity but also an opportunity to reflect upon the immense historical, artistic, cultural, and landscape patrimony which constitutes the uniqueness and peculiarity of our nation in the world. A patrimony often compromised in the past by neglect and abandonment which have consequently caused degradation and impoverishment of that which could correctly be defined as our “petroleum”. We must, therefore, be in debt to the intense social commitment demonstrated by law enforcement officials who endeavor daily and with great professionalism and competence in investigative actions of recovery, protection and safeguarding of the patrimony of our territory. My greeting goes to all these authorities and I am certain that today’s initiative will give honor to the great work carried out by all those persons who, in the course of the years, have unearthed seriously compromised artifacts and works of art.

Francesco Marchisano
Cardinal
President of the Papal Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church

“The idea of establishing an International Vocational Center “Kepha” for the conservation and valorization of our cultural heritage, in the “mens” –the thought—of the Church, is extremely opportune for various reasons: to train skilled workers capable of performing expertise art restoration; to encourage the enhancement of sacred art taking into account contemporary art and pastoral requisites; to promote study encounters for the purpose of understanding the historical-artistic heritage in an ecclesiastical sense; to prepare volunteers in pilgrimage tourism, able to contextualize the cultural heritage of the Church;
All of which, commendably made part of an overall project of human and Christian education, imparts specific vocational knowledge as well as enduring, humanitarian-Christian understanding.
I can only hope that this initiative constitutes a first, to be imitated, since the growing interest in our cultural heritage necessitates its organization by competent, interactive and widely diffused establishments in our nation.”
